Rare causes of sneezing, coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath during the winter season may include fungal allergens such as Penicillium, Alternaria, Aspergillus, Candida, and Cladosporium.

Consumption of foods containing fungal components — such as moldy cheeses, fermented dairy products, kvass, beer, champagne, smoked products, yeast-based baked goods, and pickled cabbage — may lead to skin rashes and signs of food allergy.

Fungal spores are commonly found in large quantities in air, water, soil, plants, flower pots, carpets, wooden items, household appliances, air conditioners, humidifiers, refrigerators, water coolers, and in high-humidity environments.
